Data Storage Location

Local Storage

Chatbox chat history is stored on your local device and is not uploaded to our servers.

Storage paths vary by platform:

What Data is Stored?

  • All conversation history
  • App settings and configuration

Data Security

Privacy Protection

  • Chat history not uploaded: All conversation content is saved on your device only
  • API Keys stored locally: Your API Keys are not sent to our servers
  • End-to-end: Conversations go directly to AI service providers

Security Recommendations

  • Regularly backup important data
  • Consider clearing data after using on shared devices
  • Keep your device secure to prevent others from accessing your chat history

Exporting Chat History

Desktop (Windows/macOS/Linux)

  1. Open Chatbox
  2. Go to Settings → Data Management
  3. Select "Export Data"
  4. Choose save location and format
  5. Complete the export

iOS

  1. Open Chatbox
  2. Go to Settings → Data Management
  3. Select "Export Data"
  4. Choose save location (e.g., iCloud, Files app)
  5. Complete the export

Android

  1. Open Chatbox
  2. Go to Settings → Data Management
  3. Select "Export Data"
  4. File will be saved to Documents/chatbox_ai_exports directory

Export Formats

  • JSON: Complete data, suitable for backup and recovery
  • Markdown: Easy to read, suitable for archiving and sharing

Backup and Recovery

Why Backup?

  • Migrate data when switching to a new device
  • Prevent accidental data loss
  • Sync chat history between multiple devices

How to Backup

  1. Use the export function above to export data in JSON format
  2. Save the exported file to a secure location (e.g., cloud storage)
  3. Recommended to perform backups regularly

How to Recover

  1. Install Chatbox on the new device
  2. Go to Settings → Data Management
  3. Select "Import Data"
  4. Choose the previously backed up JSON file
  5. Wait for import to complete

Data Loss

Can Data be Recovered from the Server?

Cannot be recovered. Since chat history is only saved on local devices, we cannot recover lost data from our servers.

How to Avoid Data Loss?

  • Enable auto-backup (if feature is available)
  • Regularly export important conversations manually
  • Use cloud sync services to backup exported files
  • Export data before uninstalling the app

Common Causes of Data Loss

  • Uninstalling app without backup
  • Device reset or replacement
  • App data being cleared
  • Storage failure

Multi-Device Sync

Current Status

Chatbox currently does not support automatic multi-device sync. Each device's data is stored independently.

Manual Sync Method

  1. Export data on Device A
  2. Transfer to Device B via cloud storage or other means
  3. Import data on Device B
